Jews have lived in Poland and contributed to the rich fabric of Polish life for more than a thousand years. In 1939, more than three and a half million Jews lived within its borders, constituting ten percent of the total population of the country and almost half the populace in many major urban centers. This vast population that had created a vibrant, complex and highly developed Jewish life enriching Poland and world Jewry all but disappeared between 1939 and 1945, but their valuable heritage has not been entirely lost.
The American Society for Jewish Heritage in Poland is an American charitable organization whose mission is to:
- Advance the understanding of and disseminate information about the Jews and the Jewish community in Poland, their past and current history, and their contributions and impact throughout the world; and
- Ensure that this shared heritage continues by restoring, maintaining and preserving documents, archives, books and similar artifacts.
